Newdock (St. John's Dockyard Ltd.)

Newdock, the operating name of St. John's Dockyard Limited, repairs, refits and converts vessels on an 18-acre waterfront site at St. John's, Newfoundland, in an ice-free sheltered harbour. There is no newbuilding. On 1 November 2024 the company was acquired by a partnership of the Membertou First Nation, the Qalipu First Nation and Horizon Naval Engineering; the company name, the Newdock trading name and the branding are unchanged. More than 300 certified tradespeople work at the yard. Docking is by graving dock and by a marine elevator that lifts 4,000 tonnes and feeds three docking berths, so several vessels can be worked at once. Both piers carry a minimum of 9 metres of draft alongside, with shore power and fresh water available. Jobs run from minor repair and maintenance through emergency docking to full vessel life extension, and in-house steel machining and fabrication support the more complex refits and conversions. The manufacturing area covers 6,550 square metres and includes heavy and small CNC machining. The yard is certified to ISO 9001:2015.
