Namdock

Namibia Drydock and Ship Repair (Pty) Ltd, trading as NAMDOCK, is a ship repair yard in the port of Walvis Bay. The work is dry docking, repair and maintenance; no newbuilding is done. Head office, commercial office and the dock yard are separate sites within the same port area, and some workshops lie less than a kilometre from the docks. Three floating drydocks are owned and operated, with a combined lifting capacity of 30,000 tonnes. NAMDOCK I lifts 8,000 tonnes, NAMDOCK II 6,500 tonnes and NAMDOCK III, the largest, 15,000 tonnes. Workshops are grouped by trade and each carries its own lifting gear: fabrication and piping of 830 square metres with a 15-tonne crane, a mechanical shop of 725 square metres with two 20-tonne cranes, a propulsion shop of 833 square metres with a 15-tonne crane and an electrical shop of 217 square metres with a 10-tonne crane. A 250 square metre machine shop, a 240 square metre valve shop and a 273 square metre carpentry shop complete the covered plant, and 2,740 square metres are given over to coatings including the blast yard. The valve shop pressure tests tanks, pipes, kort nozzles and rudders, and the carpentry team works largely on board.
