Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited builds and repairs ships and submarines in the Mazagon district of Mumbai. It is a Government of India undertaking under the Ministry of Defence and is certified to ISO 9001:2015. Shipbuilding on the site dates from 1774, when a small dry dock was cut at Mazagon; the company was incorporated in 1934 and taken over by the Government in 1960. Since 1960 it counts 806 vessels delivered, among them 31 warships and 8 submarines. Building is done on three slipways. Two of them take vessels of up to 32,000 DWT and are served by cranes of 300 and 40 tonnes together with a 15 tonne crane; the North Yard slipway takes up to 40,000 DWT with cranes of 60 and 15 tonnes. A Goliath crane of 300 tonnes and 138 metres span straddles both slipways and the module shop and can turn modules over for large block construction. The module shop covers about 6,000 square metres under a retractable roof, has two 50 tonne overhead cranes and is used to pre-outfit hull blocks before erection. Four dry docks are in use, named Ritchie, Mogul, East Yard and Mazagon. Ritchie and Mogul each have two 15 tonne cranes, East Yard has two of 180 tonnes, and the Mazagon dock is served by mobile crane. Afloat work uses two wet basins. Kasara has one 80 tonne and two 15 tonne cranes. The Kanhoji Angre basin, built under the modernisation programme, offers 27,000 square metres of berthing and holds two large frigates and two submarines under outfitting at the same time, with four level luffing cranes of 100, 50 and two of 15 tonnes. The Mazdock Modernization Project, costed at 9 billion rupees, added that basin, the Goliath crane, the module workshop, a cradle assembly shop, a store building and a shore integration facility where combat systems are brought together before installation on board; stated capacity rose from 8 to 10 warships from 2014 and from 6 to 11 submarines from 2016. Deliveries have covered destroyers and missile boats, submarines, cargo and passenger ships, supply vessels, a multipurpose support vessel, water tankers, tugs, dredgers, fishing trawlers, barges and border out posts, while offshore fabrication has produced jackets, wellhead platform decks, process platforms and jack-up rigs. A second facility is under development at Nhava, across the harbour in the Raigad district, on about 40 acres and planned around a large floating dry dock. The company also sells turnkey shipyard consultancy, from feasibility and project reports through tender design to execution and funding.
