Marine Tech SA is a ship repair contractor working inside the Port of Durban, at Bayhead on the east coast of South Africa. Its customers are the South African Navy and commercial owners. The company also has a location at Cape Town.
It owns no dock. Vessels are docked through Transnet National Ports Authority facilities in the Port of Durban, and alongside work is done at the company's own repair quay, which carries an average draft of 7.5 metres and is supplied with 380 volt shore power, fresh water and compressed air. There is a lay-down area able to take hatch covers. Further TNPA berths can be used, so usable alongside length can exceed the company's own frontage.
Ashore there is covered fabrication space, a pipe shop, a mechanical shop, an interior outfit shop, a paint shop for smaller fabrications, and stores with a dedicated customs bonded area. Work covers hull, structural, piping, mechanical and electrical repair, ballast water treatment system installation, modular construction, control systems, coating, marine scaffolding and propeller repair. The mechanical shop handles tailshaft surveys, valve, boiler, gearbox, pump and winch overhaul, dimensional inspection, alignment and vibration analysis; turbocharger and cargo pump work is done on board. Hydraulic support runs 24 hours a day and covers deck cranes of all makes, ro-ro access equipment, steering gear, hatch cover systems and mooring and towing winches.
The company travels to the work as well as receiving it. Electrical teams have worked in the Republic of Congo, Angola, Cameroon, Mauritius, Brazil and Australia, and crane technicians have attended vessels in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Singapore, Las Palmas and Madagascar, on the west coast of the United States, and in ports across west, central and east Africa. Riding crews carry out maintenance while vessels are under way, and underwater work is subcontracted to diving specialists.
