Falkvarv AB is a ship repair yard at Falkenberg on the Swedish west coast, between the Oresund and Gothenburg. The company was formed in 1987, though shipyard work including newbuilding has gone on at Falkenberg since 1946; the present business is repair, maintenance and conversion, and newbuilding is no longer part of it. Around forty people are employed and about sixty vessels are docked a year.
Two floating docks are worked, described by the size of ship they take rather than by their own dimensions. Dock 1 takes ships of up to 115 metres in length and 16 metres in beam and lifts 4,000 tonnes; dock 2 takes ships of up to 150 metres and 23 metres and lifts 7,500 tonnes. There is 6 metres of water at the quay, which carries a 36-tonne crane, and shore power is supplied at 440 V, 60 Hz.
Most of the work is on North Sea tonnage, among it tankers, tugs, cargo ships, workboats and barges, with research vessels, ferries and government maritime authority vessels also handled; extensive engine conversions are a specialism. The mechanical engineering department services auxiliary machinery, steering gear, gearboxes, propellers, pumps, shaft seals and hydraulics and inspects navigation, communication and monitoring equipment. A design department covers project management, 3D modelling and drawing office work from first preparation through to commissioning. Welding is done in steel, stainless steel and aluminium under a supervisor holding International Welding Specialist certification, with welding procedure specifications and qualification records produced at short notice. Blasting, painting, electrical installation and interior work are all available on site, and subcontractors are used to add capacity.
The yard is certified to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015, operates under the ISPS code with a named port facility security officer, and takes part in Falkenberg municipality's Agenda 2030 climate network.
