COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.
COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. repairs and converts ships and offshore units at Changxing Island in Shanghai. It was formed in June 2017 by merging China Shipping Industry (Shanghai Changxing) with Shanghai COSCO Shipyard and belongs to COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry within the China COSCO Shipping group; the legacy name Shanghai Changxing Shipyard is still in circulation.
The Changxing yard covers 500,000 square metres on the south bank of the island, with thirteen completed berths and a heavy-lift quay for offshore work. Four floating docks give a combined lifting capacity of 760,000 tonnes: COSCO SHIPPING Emeishan at 400,000 tonnes, COSCO SHIPPING Jiuhuashan at 200,000 tonnes, and COSCO SHIPPING Putuoshan and COSCO SHIPPING Wutaishan at 80,000 tonnes each. A second yard at Huajing, about forty kilometres up the Huangpu River, covers 38,000 square metres and holds one 30,000-tonne floating dock, Baiyunshan.
The work covers conventional, special and high-performance ships and the design, manufacture, repair and conversion of offshore equipment. Projects have included EPC manufacture of FPSO and drillship modules, FPSO and FSRU conversions, and the repair and conversion of VLCCs, VLOCs, container ships of over ten thousand TEU, chemical tankers, LPG, LNG, reefer, cement and asphalt carriers and offshore support vessels. Annual capacity is about 400 ships repaired or converted.
Approvals include dual DNV-GL and CCS certification of the integrated quality, environmental, occupational health and safety and energy management system, an American Bureau of Shipping audit and EPC qualification for ships and offshore equipment, and national level-two work safety standardisation. In 2021 the workforce was close to 5,000, of whom 934 were direct employees and some 3,800 subcontractors.
