Cochin Shipyard Limited

Cochin Shipyard Limited builds and repairs ships at Perumanoor in Kochi, Kerala. It was incorporated in 1972 as a wholly owned Government of India company, sits under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and holds Miniratna Schedule A status. Certification covers ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. Newbuilding is done in building dock No. 2, which takes ships of up to 110,000 DWT and is served, together with the grand assembly area, by gantry cranes of 300 and 150 tonnes and two level luffing cranes of 50 tonnes. Dry dock No. 3, the newer graving dock, has a stepped width and a 600-tonne crane and serves both building and repair; it takes aircraft carriers of up to 70,000 tonnes docking displacement, LNG carriers, capesize vessels and jack-up rigs. Repairs run in dock No. 1, for ships of up to 125,000 DWT, drained in under three hours by high capacity pumps and served by four level luffing cranes of 40, 40, 60 and 10 tonnes. Supporting shops include a 13,000 square metre steel stockyard with two 25-tonne gantry cranes and a 25-tonne semi-gantry, linked to rail, road and the waterfront; a hull shop for blocks of up to 50 tonnes; and an assembly shop under a telescopic sliding roof, where blocks of up to 450 tonnes are joined before erection. Equipment includes CNC and plasma cutting, shot blasting, automatic painting, a 1,200-tonne hydraulic press, line heating for curved shell, one-side welding for large panels, electroslag welding and a 150-tonne transporter. Repair is also carried out at four sites away from Perumanoor. The International Ship Repair Facility on Cochin Port land at Willingdon Island opened in August 2024: 16.9 hectares with 850 metres of water frontage, a ship lift and transfer system of six workstations for vessels of up to 6,000 tonnes light weight, a small dry dock, and a maritime park for supplier units. The Mumbai unit, opened in January 2019, works the Hughes dry dock inside Mumbai Port under an agreement with the port. The Kolkata unit has operated since June 2021 at Netaji Subhash Dock under an agreement with Kolkata Port. Ship repair at the Marine Dockyard in Port Blair began in 2021, under a 2019 agreement with the Andaman and Nicobar administration.
