CMI Qingdao Shipyard

CMI Qingdao Shipyard builds ships at the Nvdao heavy industry base in the Jimo district of Qingdao, about 90 kilometres from the city centre. The yard traces its origins to 1949 and has delivered more than 600 vessels. It traded as Qingdao Yangfan Shipbuilding until April 2025, when China Merchants Industry took a 52 per cent stake through a RMB 340 million share purchase and a RMB 690 million capital injection and renamed the yard, changing the legal entity to the China Merchants industrial group's Qingdao yard. The parent group itself became China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group in December 2025, keeping the CMI abbreviation. Two dry docks work the site, one large and one small, and three gantry cranes cover the berths, two of 600 tonnes and one of 150 tonnes. Annual capacity at the time of the 2025 acquisition was 1.5 million DWT of shipbuilding and 200,000 tonnes of processed steel. Output centres on large bulk carriers, with 82,000 DWT and 205,000 DWT types recurring, alongside container ships from 1,000 to 6,000 TEU, government service vessels and offshore support craft. The orderbook stood at 33 ships totalling 3.385 million DWT in April 2025, with deliveries running to 2028. Construction of a smart assembly workshop began in July 2026.
