Cantieri del Mediterraneo S.p.A.
Cantieri del Mediterraneo S.p.A. repairs and converts commercial vessels and pleasure craft in the port of Naples, with a separate business unit for yachts. Newbuilding ceased decades ago and the yard's work today is repair, conversion and refit.
The company was founded in 1911 as Societa Bacini & Scali Napoletani, to run two building slipways and two masonry dry docks in the port of Naples held under concession from the City of Naples. Between 1918 and 1923 it added newbuilding to repair work; in 1928, with shipping in crisis, it turned to converting cargo ships into passenger ships. From 1929 to 1931 management passed to Cantieri Partenopei S.A. and the workforce grew from 100 to around 2,000, building cruisers, converting warships, rebuilding numerous Tirrenia fleet vessels and producing small craft.
The site covers 128,000 square metres, of which 24,000 square metres are covered workshops, warehouses and plant, with more than 60,000 square metres of open yard. Ship services cover steel and piping work, hydraulics and pump repair, installation and repair of electrical and electronic systems, interior outfitting, painting and anticorrosive treatment, and overhaul of main and auxiliary engines. Heavy crane hire is offered as a separate service, and the site has a heliport, a bunkering station and round-the-clock support. The Yacht Business Unit has operated within the refit department since 2016, with two travel lifts sharing an 11-metre-wide basin able to haul out yachts of up to 650 tonnes displacement, dry docking for the largest superyachts, three large sheds giving separate rooms for refit, painting, carpentry, plumbing and electrical work, and a wide hardstanding area.
The yard lies 1.7 km from the centre of Naples, 800 metres from the central station, 500 metres from the motorway and 6 km from Capodichino airport. Customers include AIDA Cruises, Carnival, Grimaldi, Hapag, ZIM, La Meridionale, Seaspan, V.Ships, Anglo-Eastern, Eni, Technip and Prysmian.
