Bulyard Shipbuilding Industry EAD operates in the Southern Industrial Zone of the port of Varna. The company was founded on 26 March 2004 and took over the assets of the former Varna Shipyard in the same year, so the building record of the site predates the present legal person. Ship repair, new construction and steel structures are the three activities, with repair the larger part of the work today, and the yard designs, builds and repairs ships of up to 100,000 tonnes deadweight. More than 850 ships have been built on the site for owners in over 27 countries. The published portfolio includes general cargo ships of 3,000 tonnes, tankers of 4,000 tonnes, a 29,990-tonne product tanker, the 100,000-tonne tanker Han Asparuh, bulk carriers of 38,000 and 25,000 tonnes, a 15,000-tonne dry cargo multipurpose ship, a 400-container container ship and passenger craft for about 100 people. Current new-construction output is steel volume blocks, sections and metal structures of up to 750 tonnes and up to 16 by 32 metres, produced under a design agreement with IHB Shipdesign; the company has stated an intention to extend this to hulls for specialised vessels such as platform supply ships. Repair volume runs to more than 60 vessels a year, among them cargo ships, tankers, gas carriers, drilling ships and platform supply vessels. Two graving dock chambers are in use, the larger served by four 80-tonne cranes and one of 800 tonnes, the smaller by four 80-tonne cranes and one of 500 tonnes. The repair berths carry cranes of 5, 10 and 15 tonnes, with 80-tonne cranes on the two short heavy-lift berths, and all docks and berths have fresh water, salt water, compressed air and electrical supply. The Bulgarian Chamber of Shipping awarded the yard its Saint Nicholas prize in December 2025, having also recognised it in December 2023, and in August 2023 the consortium behind the Bulgarian Antarctic base St. Kliment Ohridski and its research vessel issued a certificate of appreciation.
