Asian Marine Services Public Company Limited, a listed Thai company, runs the Asimar Shipyard at Laem Fa Pha in Phra Samut Chedi, Samut Prakan. The company started in 1981 as a marine survey business and moved into ship repair as demand grew, buying its first floating dock from Japan and a second from Germany. Repair is taken up to 25,000 deadweight tonnes and newbuilding up to 120 metres in length, and the Royal Thai Navy vessel HTMS Suriya was delivered from here.
The Samut Prakan yard covers 36,000 square metres and has a permanent workforce of 350. Two floating docks carry the repair programme: Asimar 1 lifts 2,000 tonnes and takes vessels to 6,000 deadweight tonnes, and Asimar 2 lifts 6,500 tonnes, takes vessels to 20,000 deadweight tonnes and can hold ships of up to 161 metres alongside. A north dry dock and a slipway in the south building area serve construction, with building berth areas of 8,500 and 11,600 square metres.
Covered plant runs to three fabrication halls of 900, 1,200 and 1,200 square metres, a 1,200 square metre building shop, a 900 square metre machine shop, 1,200 square metres each for pipework and CNC work, a 400 square metre electrical shop, a 400 square metre bonded warehouse and two blasting shops. Lifting is by a 100-tonne overhead gantry, mobile cranes of 80 and 50 tonnes, eleven 5-tonne and two 10-tonne gantry cranes and forklifts to 7 tonnes. Steel is cut on CNC plasma and oxy-acetylene machines and formed on a 300-tonne angle bender and a 400-tonne hydraulic press, with MIG and submerged arc welding, lathes and rolling, bending and flanging machines on site.
A second yard at Kanchanadit in Surat Thani is the smaller of the two and is equipped with slipways, a 50-tonne mobile crane and a CNC cutting machine.
