6Sigma Marine (Pty) Ltd is a ship repair, conversion and engineering contractor at the Sturrock dry dock in Table Bay Harbour, Cape Town. It was set up in May 2012 as the naval architecture and engineering design office for DCD Marine Cape Town and has since taken on repair, conversion and refit work in its own right. It is privately owned, and its head office and workshops sit at opposite entrances of the Sturrock dock.
It owns no dock, quay or slipway. Work is carried out in facilities of Transnet National Ports Authority: the Sturrock and Robinson dry docks and the Syncrolift at Cape Town, the dry dock at East London, and alongside and on the slipway at Walvis Bay in Namibia. Those are allocated first come, first served, so docking dates have to be booked early.
The company sells turnkey engineering, procurement and construction for ship repair, conversion, refit and newbuilding, and for medium and heavy steel fabrication. Trades run to blasting and painting, steel and pipework including ballast water treatment installation, mechanical work and machining, electrical, heating and ventilation, hydraulics, cladding and insulation, outfitting, scaffolding, shafts and rudders. Riding squads work on board while a vessel is trading, and subsea repair covers stern and bow thruster maintenance and replacement. The engineering arm provides naval architecture and marine engineering design at conceptual, functional and detail level, finite element analysis, failure mode and effects analysis, class-approved design and databooks, three-dimensional scanning for systems refits, project management and owner's representation, with procurement, importing and clearing, transport and warehousing alongside.
Past work includes a survey of the intermediate caisson gate of the Sturrock dock, the conversion of a fishing boat to a yacht using three-dimensional scanning, the refit and upgrade of the Nautilus, and work on the Saipem FDS2. The management system is verified by Lloyd's Register to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018.
