SGS-CSTC Standards Technical Services (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. is the Shanghai-based operational arm of SGS-CSTC, a joint venture established in 1991 between the SGS Group of Geneva and the China Standard Technology Development Corporation under what was then the State Administration of Quality Technical Supervision. From its laboratories and offices in Shanghai, the company supports the wider SGS network of inspectors, certifiers and chemists that operates more than one hundred offices and two hundred laboratories across mainland China. For the marine sector, the Shanghai unit carries out ballast water sampling and analysis to IMO D-2 indicative and detailed standards, scrubber wash-water sampling under MEPC.259(68), and laboratory testing of fuels, lubricants and oily residues. Surveyors handle Inventory of Hazardous Materials sampling and Hazmat documentation for both newbuilds and in-service tonnage, supporting compliance with the Hong Kong Convention and the EU Ship Recycling Regulation. Tightness verification using ultrasonic hatch cover testing equipment, watertight integrity testing of doors and penetrations, and on-board noise and vibration measurement under MSC.337(91) and ISO 6954 are delivered by trained technicians dispatched to anchorages and shipyards along the Yangtze River Delta. Underwater hull inspections are coordinated with diving subcontractors for in-water surveys accepted by class. The Shanghai team holds CNAS and CMA laboratory accreditations and works as a recognised service supplier under the major IACS members, including ABS, Bureau Veritas, DNV and Lloyd's Register, allowing reports issued by SGS-CSTC Shanghai to be used for statutory and class purposes on merchant vessels calling at ports across eastern China, with logistics support extending to Ningbo, Nanjing, Zhangjiagang, Taicang and other Yangtze River Delta terminals.
