The Naval Ship Hydrodynamics and Structure Performance Inspection Laboratory is a technical unit of China Ship Scientific Research Center, a national maritime research institution founded in 1951 with its headquarters in Wuxi and operational offices in Shanghai and Qingdao. The laboratory works alongside the wider CSSRC organisation, which holds three national key laboratories, two national testing centres, and one national energy and marine engineering equipment research and development centre, reflecting the third-largest scale of ship and offshore engineering research facilities in the world and the first in Asia.
Service capability for the maritime industry covers hydrodynamic performance verification, structural performance testing, full-scale and model vibration analysis, machinery balancing, underwater radiated noise and shipboard noise measurement, and shock and explosion resistance evaluation for merchant ships, naval craft, and offshore installations. The laboratory also supports ballast water management system commissioning testing and underwater inspection campaigns for vessel and platform owners, with reporting structured for review by attending classification society surveyors and flag-state inspectors.
CSSRC is recognised by major classification societies including the American Bureau of Shipping, DNV, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, and ClassNK, and the centre is a member of the International Towing Tank Conference and the International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress, with research partnerships extending to institutions in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, Japan, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway. From its Wuxi base on the shores of Lake Taihu, the laboratory supports vessels operating from Shanghai, Ningbo, Nanjing, and the wider Yangtze Delta port belt.
