Guangzhou Wenchong Dockyard Co., Ltd., abbreviated GWD, was set up on 1 January 2006 as the ship-repair arm carved out of the historic Wenchong yard, whose predecessor the Wenchong Ship Repair and Building Factory dates back to 1955 and was restructured into a limited liability company in 2001. The yard sits in Huangpu District of Guangzhou between the old and new Huangpu ports along the Pearl River and operates under the China State Shipbuilding Corporation umbrella, alongside the sister shipbuilding entity CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding formed in the 2013 merger of the original Wenchong and Huangpu shipyards. The dockyard accommodates vessels up to 428 metres in length across seven docks and handles drydocking, hull repair, engine overhaul, conversion work and general marine maintenance for foreign and domestic shipowners, with a workforce of around 1,600 staff including roughly 1,000 engineers. Within Wenchong Dockyard's class-recognised quality scope under CCS, KR and LR, the team carries out hatch cover ultrasonic tightness testing, watertight integrity testing, underwater hull inspection, non-destructive testing and ultrasonic thickness gauging as part of dry-docking and special surveys.
