COSCO Shipping (Guangzhou) Engineering Co., Ltd. sits within the southern China cluster of COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry, the shipbuilding, offshore engineering and ship repair arm of state group China COSCO Shipping. The local platform brings together the historic Pearl River yards that were consolidated into COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Guangdong), a facility traced back to a yard founded in 1971 on a 600,000 square metre site at Longxue island with around 1,200 metres of quayside, multiple dry docks and a newbuilding and offshore engineering base in Machong town on the Dongguan side of the estuary, including three slipways, three quays and supporting steel and outfitting shops. From that industrial base, COSCO SHIPPING (Guangzhou) Engineering handles voyage repairs, conversions and dry dockings for ocean-going tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, gas carriers and offshore units calling at Guangzhou, Nansha and Shenzhen, and is recognized by the China Classification Society to perform statutory life-saving and fire-fighting equipment servicing on board, including periodical testing of LSA and FFE items, lifeboat and rescue boat overhauls, liferaft inspection, fire extinguisher recharge, hose and hydrant pressure tests and EEBD/SCBA breathing apparatus maintenance. The engineering company also undertakes ultrasonic hatch cover tightness checks and watertight integrity surveys on vessels in the yard or alongside the affiliated wharves. Through the parent group, the Guangzhou unit can call on the wider COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry network of subsidiary yards in Dalian, Nantong, Zhoushan, Qidong and Lianyungang for additional capacity, materials and specialist labour when project size demands it.
