China Ship Development and Design Centre

China Ship Development and Design Centre, also known as the 701st Research Institute, is headquartered in central Wuhan, the major Hubei Province city on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River that hosts a large concentration of Chinese shipbuilding, marine research and naval engineering institutions. The institute is one of China's principal centres for overall ship research, design and development, with particular expertise in ship system engineering and the long-running design of major commercial and specialised vessels delivered to Chinese and overseas shipyards. Among its laboratories the institute operates the National Key Laboratory on Ship Vibration and Noise in Wuhan, together with the Ministry of National Defense Key Laboratory of Electromagnetic Compatibility and a Ministry of Education noise-and-vibration laboratory. The vibration and acoustics scope covers measurement and analysis of structural vibration on engines, shafting and auxiliary machinery, dynamic balancing of rotating components, hull-borne and airborne noise surveys onboard merchant vessels, and modelling and prototype validation of vibration-isolation systems for marine power plants and shipboard equipment foundations. Patent activity covers areas such as ship vibration isolation device dynamic-coupling multi-load identification methods, with associated test rigs supporting industrial development of mounts, isolators and damping arrangements used on commercial tonnage. The Centre holds service supplier recognition by Lloyd's Register for vibration and noise measurement, allowing measurement records to be considered during class survey programmes and during machinery condition-monitoring work on commercial tonnage delivered in China and trading internationally. Customers include Chinese and overseas shipyards, marine equipment manufacturers and owners requiring objective measurement data for design verification, troubleshooting and machinery condition-monitoring programmes.
